REI is a co-op, and its members are its owners. Join once for $30 and you are a member for life, with no renewals and no annual dues. Members typically get 10% back each year as a Co-op Member Reward on eligible full-price purchases, plus member offers, savings on shop services and rentals, and a full year for returns under the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Members also help steer the co-op by voting in the Board of Directors election.
Why it works
REI membership is a one-off $30 purchase rather than a subscription, so the value is easy to see. The annual Co-op Member Reward, typically 10% of eligible full-price spending, arrives by March each year and can be spent at REI. The everyday perks suit people who spend a lot of time outdoors: free US standard shipping with no minimum order, 20% off bike and snow shop services, a free tube with flat tyre repairs and a free machine wax, up to 33% off rentals and member pricing on classes and events. Members can also buy used gear and trade in their own through Re/Supply in exchange for an REI Co-op gift card. The co-op model gives members a real stake, from voting for the Board to a $5 donation to the REI Cooperative Action Fund for every membership sold. REI reports that members earned more than $202 million in Co-op Member Rewards on eligible 2025 purchases, and that its community of lifetime members grew to 26 million in 2025.
