The Membership Rewards programme is how eligible American Express Card Members turn spending into points. Points come from eligible purchases on an enrolled Card, from a morning coffee to the weekly shop, with extra points in certain categories depending on the Card. Card Members then choose how to use them: travel at AmexTravel.com, transfers to partner airline and lodging programmes, Gift Cards, statement credits or Pay with Points at checkout.
Why it works
Membership Rewards gives Card Members many ways to earn and even more ways to use points. Every eligible dollar earns at least one point, and some Cards add extra points in set categories. Amex Offers, referrals, AmexTravel.com bookings and a linked Rakuten account can add more. Pay with Points covers all or part of flights, prepaid hotels, cruises and more booked at AmexTravel.com, and Insider Fares bring reduced prices with select airlines, including Emirates, when points cover the whole flight. Points can be transferred to participating airline and lodging loyalty programmes, and Card Members get complimentary access to point.me for Membership Rewards points to compare award flights first. Closer to home, points can cover eligible charges as a statement credit, pay at Amazon.com, work through Apple Pay with 'Use Rewards' at online checkout, or become retail, restaurant, entertainment and travel Gift Cards. Points do not expire, although they can be forfeited in some circumstances. Several Cards can share one points balance through 'Manage Connections' online or in the Amex App, and Amex publishes a running summary of programme updates.
